This factsheet explains how climate change has gendered effects in communities facing high security risks. It provides recommendations for ways multilateral actors can include climate change in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and support women in areas with high climate-security risk.

This factsheet, jointly published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) compiles the conclusions of research on the gendered effects of climate change. For example, climate-induced migration generally manifests as men migrating for new opportunities while women stay home and take on extra workload in managing households and farms by themselves. Likewise, conflicts exacerbated by climate change increase the risk of gender-based violence due to both displacement and deteriorating security. Women also form local organisations and engage in peacebuilding and environmental protection, and face threats of violence in response.

To address these challenges, the authors present four recommendations for multilateral actors. The explicit audience is the UN, but the recommendations equally apply to the EU and its member states. First, provide financial, technical and institutional support to grassroots women's groups and women peacebuilders. Second, multilateral institutions should provide additional protections for displaced people. Third, crisis management missions and national governments should proactively engage with local women mediators, environmental defenders, and other related actors in the field. And finally, multilateral actors and their member states should include climate change in their WPS National Action Plans and look for synergies between the two policy fields.
